Our approach to packaging design

Understanding your brand or product

The start of our design process - discovering and assessing how the customer interacts with your brand and packaging - is vital to determining its design. The environment in which it sits can dictate how much we need to shout about features and benefits, the demand put on the durability of the package or the necessity to stand out against your competitors.

Innovative and Creative Design

One of On Poynt's key values when designing is to try and be ‘disruptive in everything’. We firmly believe that the packaging design can make or break a first impression of your brand. The more innovative a packaging design idea, the more special the box feels and the better the impression left on a customer. This can be done with the structure of functional product packaging design, or the visual design - whether that be fonts, illustration or iconography.

Functionality

When push comes to shove, what is the purpose of a box or bottle? To protect the product - it’s important cargo inside. Functionality can disguise itself in different ways: sometimes the function of a piece of packaging is to be as eye-catching as possible but most of the time, it's to stop drops and scratches from damaging the end product, especially important for food products. Packaging nets, structural design and inner packaging support are important to consider when looking for packaging.

Sustainability

One of the most important design elements to consider when designing packaging is the material used. In accordance with the work we have done with Indie.eco, On Poynt will always advise you to house your product in the most sustainable packaging materials possible: sometimes by using the least material, or by using the best materials available to ensure packaging can be recycled, re-used or has a limiting effect on your company's carbon footprint.

What packaging can we design?

In our time, we have designed the perfect packaging for many clients, from boxes that transform into children’s play sets to bottles built to adorn mantlepieces long after the drink inside has been poured. pretty much everything in terms of package solution is possible.

What is the packaging design process?

step
1

Discovery and Ideation

Let’s start the packaging design process. Before we get down to physical appearance of your packaging, or creating unique packaging for your brand, we need to consider the product inside. When it comes to packaging, every product brings different challenges and by sitting down with you to establish the essence of your product, we can establish the most important factors to consider when choosing the design concepts to bring to the table.

step
2

Initial design ideas

At the start of the packaging design project, it's important to consider the essence of the product and how we put your product in the best light. We utilise design sketches to investigate the appearance of packaging and research a variety of materials to help guide us in creating successful packaging for your product. We then take time to discuss the right solution with you in terms of materials and design.

step
3

Dielines and Function

Packaging dielines are the fancy way of saying how packaging might be put together. Our packaging is designed with budget in mind and so we will always ensure we make your product stand out whilst maintaining parts of your packaging which will protect the quality product your customer will receive.

step
4

Renders and Graphical Design

Renders are a brilliant way to envisage how a product may look on a shelf. When designing your packaging (unless you are one of our top-rated designers) it can sometimes be hard to work out if your design needs have been met. That's why we create a package using our 2D design process, and fancy 3D software, to bring your entire packaging to life, allowing you to see how product information will look on the back, and the general appearance of your product within the box or bag.

step
5

Prototyping and Manufacture

As well as the design of your packaging, we can also suggest the best local production for you item. We have partnered with the best in bottle labelling, luxury packaging, retail and e-commerce specialists to make sure all matter of solutions are found for you. They understand the importance of functional packaging and so many offer a prototyping and packaging management service to ensure design is fit for purpose.
